Dental malpractice and medical malpractice cases are known for high compensation settlements, but the actual dollar amount can vary significantly from state to state, even for pretty much the same or very similar incidents.

Below are a few examples of previously litigated medical malpractice cases plus their estimated settlements, gathered throughout the United States.

A New Jersey based podiatrist failed to diagnose a woman's diabetes. Further to that, he did not adequately treat her foot ulcer, which ultimately led to the amputation of one of toes. And even worse, he evidentially tried to cover up his misconduct, but the bubble busted later on as he was investigated by the authorities. The settlement amount: $425,000.

A Florida resident was suffering from a foot ulcer that produced discharge, but was failed to get treated for nine months. The leg became infected and had to be amputated. Later on, it turned out that the health care professional who was in charge of her wasn't even a licensed doctor, even though he pretended to be. $300,000 in settlements.

Another case reported from Florida; a surgeon performed an operation on an elderly patient suffering from advanced vascular disease. A few days later the patient developed a necrosis and her leg had to be amputated. $100,000 was awarded in compensation.

Another 'fake' doctor case; a young woman's tendon was ruptured and a doctor did surgery on it. The woman was released, but shortly thereafter her tendon broke again. She went back to the hospital and that's when the whole thing with the fake doctor got uncovered. She was able to obtain a settlement over $115,000.

A false diagnosis did caused a patient almost to die. She was admitted to the hospital where she was put into intensive care and received numerous surgeries. Her life was saved but her leg had to be amputated and she became disabled as a result of the medical malpractice. Settlement costs: $500.000 in this case.
